من المستحيل تقديم تواريخ محددة للأقوال في سفر الأمثال، حيث تعد "تجميعة لتجميعات" متعلقة بنمط حياة استمر لأكثر من ألف عام.[3] إن العبارة المذكورة تقليديًا في العنوان مأخوذة من الفصل 1:1، وهي mishley shelomoh، (أمثال سليمان)، وتتكرر العبارة في 10:1 و 25:1، من المرجح أن تكون العبارة تهدف إلى عنونة المحتوى وليس نسب التأليف إلى سليمان.[4]

الكتاب عبارة عن مختارات، ويتكون من ست وحدات منفصلة. الأولى، الفصول 1-9، ربما كانت آخر وحدة يتم تكوينها، في الفترة الفارسية أو الهلنستية. يتوازى هذا القسم مع الكتابات المسمارية السابقة.[5] أما القسم الثاني، الفصل 10-22:16، فيحمل عنوان "أمثال سليمان"، والذي ربما يكون قد شجع على إدراجه في الكتاب المقدس العبري. الوحدة الثالثة هي "أمل أذنك واسمع كلام الحكماء": جزء كبير منها هو إعادة صياغة لعمل مصري يعود إلى الألفية الثانية قبل الميلاد، وهو تعاليم أمينيموبي، والذي وصل إلى المؤلف (أو المؤلفين) من خلال الترجمة الآرامية. الفصل 24:23 يبدأ قسما ومصدرا جديدين مع عبارة "وَهَذِهِ أيضاً مَزِيدٌ مِنْ أقوالِ الحِكْمَةِ". يحتوي المقطع التالي في الفصل 25:1 على عبارة مفادها أن الأمثال التالية قد دونها "رجال الملك حزقيا "، مشيرة إلى أنها قد تم جمعها في عهد حزقيا في أواخر القرن الثامن قبل الميلاد. الفصلان 30 و31 ("أقوال أجور"، "أقوال الملك لموئيل"، ووصف الزوجة الصالحة) هي مجموعة من الملاحق، تختلف تمامًا في الأسلوب والتركيز عن الفصول السابقة.[6]

كان نوع "الحكمة" الأدبي واسع الانتشار في جميع أنحاء الشرق الأدنى القديم، وتكشف قراءة سفر الأمثال إلى جانب الأمثلة التي تم العثور عليها في مصر وبلاد ما بين النهرين عن أرضية مشتركة تتقاسمها الحكمة العالمية.[7] ربما يكون أدب الحكمة في إسرائيل قد تطور في البلاط الملكي، ودور التعلم؛[8] ومع ذلك، فإن الانطباع الأكثر وضوحا هو أن التعليم كان يتم داخل الأسرة في القرى الصغيرة.[9]
