A pictorial representation of the tangent space of a single point, x, on a كرة. A vector in this tangent space can represent a possible velocity at x. After moving in that direction to another nearby point, one's velocity would then be given by a vector in the tangent space of that nearby point—a different tangent space, not shown.

لتكن x نقطة في المنطوي المتراص M ذي n-بعد, والنقطة x مماسة لصورة من R^n و المنطوي M فأن النتيجة في هذا التركيب تسمى فضاء مماس للمنطوي M عند النقطة x ويرمز له بالرمز T_xM واذا كانت gamma هو منحني يمر بالنقطة x , فأن مشتقة gamma عند النقطة x هو متجه في فضاء المماس T_xM
